The Johnsons praise the Lord for all He has accomplished since the beginning of their ministry in the Kenya bush, especially with the completion of the Clinics of Care buildings, the Bethel Bible and Technical School, and then the Team House.
Gary and Pat have the privilege of reaching out to many through the Clinics of Care, as well as the mobile clinics. Unless it is an emergency, there is a full-time evangelist who speaks to each patient before they are seen for medical treatment. They also have developed a clinic, lab, dental and eye departments. The capable staff of nationals have been trained by the Johnsons, and are faithful to their work as well as to the Lord.
Once each year Clinics of Care is host to the Lighthouse for Christ Eye Camp. This Christian medical team will come and spend one week doing eye exams and surgeries. In February-March 2007 the eye camp saw some 394 patients, did 57 surgeries, and there were 20 who professed Christ as Saviour.
Gary is a driver for the Gideons International in Kenya. Going with a member of the Gideons, Gary is able to visit many schools. At these schools they set up tables with Bibles and New Testaments, and present them to teachers and students alike. One day last February they were able to distribute nearly 2,000 Scripture portions – in only one day. This year so far they have distributed close to 10,000 Scripture portions.
A great ministry opening is available in the schools through the showing of Christian and HIV/AIDS videos to the students. Although statistics show otherwise, many do not believe that AIDS could happen to them; so this is a great challenge to bring before the populace. May the Lord use His Word, and the videos, to speak to the hearts of these young people, and keep them from this horrible disease.
The Bethel Bible School trains young men to be pastors. Please pray with the Johnsons that Lord would call more young men to the study of God’s Word, and become servants for Christ. The Bethel Technical School is training young ladies in dressmaking and tailoring, as well as in the principles of being a Christian woman.
Finally, a great ministry over the past years has been to host teams who come to serve short-term. Teams from 2 to 15 young Christian men and women come to learn and help in various outreach ministries. They have been active in the clinic, teaching at the Bethel Bible and Technical Schools, leading ladies meetings, Sunday school teachers training, tract distribution in the open-air market, and having Bible studies with the ebony wood carvers of the area.
At present the Johnsons will be in the USA on a six-month furlough starting in September. Pray for their time at home that they will be effective servants of the Lord, and encourage others to the work of foreign missions.
PRAISES/ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- The opening of the “Clinics of Care” ministry on October 30, 1995, in Isovya, Kenya, and later the establishment of the Bethel Bible and Technical School, training pastors, and girls in sewing classes.
PRAYER REQUESTS/GOALS FOR THE FUTURE
- Pray for the Johnsons as they spend 6 months on furlough.
- Pray that the lord will use His Word, and through the videos, to speak to hearts and keep the children from the horrible disease of HIV/AIDS.
FIELD POSITIONS NEEDED
- Doctor and/or nurse to minister at Clinics of Care
- A missionary couple to help in the Bethel Bible and Technical School.

Rev. and Mrs. Mark Kyung Soo Kim (Hannah Hang Sook Rhee) (Appointed 1990) Deborah (Ha Young) and Esther (Chan Mi)
Bible College of East Africa P. O. Box 41140 Nairobi, KENYA, East Africa
Phone: 011-254-20-802-324; 011-254-20-862-606 Fax: 011-254-20-802-044 Email: bceakim@wananchi.com
The Bible College of East Africa has been used of the Lord in training Christian leaders for the past 31 years. One third of that time the Lord has blessed the faithful ministry of Rev. Mark (Kyung Soo) Kim and his wife Hannah (Hang Sook) Kim. The Bible College has undergone so many improvements in the past 10 years that the students who attended before the Kims arrived marvel at all the Lord has accomplished by His grace. The purpose of the BCEA is to train godly men for leadership in churches throughout East Africa. The 31st graduation ceremony took place in 2002 with 19 graduates. Over 700 people attended to congratulate the successful graduates at the end of their academic studies at the College and the beginning of a life of service for Him.
Rev. Mark Kim has had the oversight of this important ministry and growing student body (now numbering over 100 from nine different countries). Through his continuing and untiring efforts many new Bible College buildings have been built for the staff and student needs. A chapel now accommodates up to 600 people for the College and local church use on Sundays. There is a power back-up system that has been installed at the College. The system insures that the Church and the Bible College will be able to function well into the evenings.
A new girls’ dormitory opened in January of 1997 with numerous young ladies preparing for Christian service. The Bible College Education Center has been established and is used of the Lord in the education of the children in the community.
A 300-foot-deep well is in full operation now to supply water for the staff and students. The college has also made it a free source of water to the surrounding villages who have suffered with the inadequate area water supply, which provides many opportunities to witness. Rev. Kim has also improved security for the Mission personnel and property against the constant threat of thieves and thugs. Mrs. Kim has done a great job beautifying the grounds with hundreds of flowering trees and plants.
Rev. and Mrs. Kim have been very successful in recruiting other missionaries to join them in this valuable work for the Lord and for the development of the Church throughout Africa.
Praise the Lord for these dedicated servants of God who desire to be used of God to prepare many for service in Africa.
PRAISES/ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Praise for the 117 students currently attending the Bible College of East Africa.
- Praise the Lord for the reopening of the Bible College Education Center on January 8, 2002.
- For the opening of Ngomongo Eden Education Center on January 14, 2002 with morning kindergarten and free afternoon literacy classes. Also great numbers are attending Church and Sunday School at this location.
- Rev. Kim with the help of Dr. Jeffrey Khoo started a Bachelor of Ministry program at the Bible College.
- The First BCEA Alumni Conference was held last year with sixty-five alumni from East Africa.
PRAYER REQUESTS/GOALS FOR THE FUTURE
- Pray that BCEA will be able to provide more scholarships for its needy students ($30.00 per student per month).
- Pray for the safety of the Kims as they work and travel in Kenya.
- A fruitful ministry from weekly visitation in the Ruaraka area where the Bible College is located.

Miss Judith Collins (Reappointed 2002)
P.O. Box 16967 Nairobi 00620, KENYA, East Africa
Phone: 011-254-20-780-082 Email: canadagoos@maf.or.ke
Veteran missionary Judith Collins served under The Independent Board in Kenya at the Bible College of East Africa from 1970 through 1984. Since then she taught for 17 years at Faith College of the Bible (Nairobi), returning once again to the B.C.E.A. in 2002.
The newest project of the Independent Presbyterian Mission in Kenya is a diverse evangelistic outreach to the Rendille people in Baalah It is located near the trading center Korr in Marsabit District. A young Rendille man, Peter Lkayo, originally from Baalah who became a Christian, started evangelizing his own people in 1997. When he and Judith Collins met, they joined forces to take the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to this unreached section of Rendille pastoralists in the deserts of northern Kenya. It is tough going in the harsh, dry, implacable heat of the desert, where nothing can be planted or grown. In 2001, in response to the plea of the Baalah village elders, they opened a thorn-bush "school" of 50 pre-schoolers under the shade of a large tree, ringed for protection with branches of thorn-bush. The first permanent structure was a one-room Pre-school classroom in 2002, and in 2004 they opened a beautiful four-classroom building for classes one through four. The second classroom block is currently under construction. Established to function primarily as a christian school, teaching the Kenyan Government Primary Syllabus, it reached Grade 5 in January 2007. One project led to another, as village adult literacy classes took off. These basic literacy teachers have reached Grade 8 or Form II or Form IV, while three or four are less trained, having learned themselves to read, write and do sums from one of these village classes. The Rendille Catechism (Questions and Answers About God) and the Rendille John Gospel are used for opening devotions and memory work. In so many cases, these budding literacy-learners come to the little church at Baalah each Lord's Day. The Church is the center for preaching and worship. Peter Lkayo, linguistics student at University of Nairobi, who did the translations, tries to reach Baalah each month, or otherwise sends his message-tapes or message outlines for the church leaders (primary or literacy teachers through the week) to formulate a Bible message. A lively mamas' choir is always ready to sing. Individual prayers in the service can be offered by our older school children and sometimes by a mama. It is very heartening to hear these learners praying from their hearts in public. A permanent church is being constructed, having reached the ring beam, awaiting the roof and internal finishing. Baptisms have been performed in 2004 and 2007 when 29 of the school children insisted on being baptized. With adults, up to the age of 71, it was a happy day of harvest, with all glory to the Lord Jesus Christ. Since Lkayo is not ordained, we are dependent on members of the Mission and Board who can make themselves available to come and assist.
PRAISES/ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Praise God for the victory He has given in preserving the primary school, church, and adult literacy classes from takeovers by other missions.
Praise God also for the Judith's excellent health, and that no cancer can be found in Peter Lkayo. Praise God that the Lord's people have given again and again to cover the 2007 financial needs which were over and above normal operations. Praise God for the Baalah church, led by a committee of elder-candidates and student-pastors. They have 41 new believers. Their constitution has been submitted to the Kenyan government for registration.
PRAYER REQUESTS/GOALS FOR THE FUTURE
- To initiate and carry on an outreach as ours in such a remote desert is very expensive; probably such costs might explain why no other church or mission ever went to Baalah to evangelise or try to plant a church. Our Baalah Outreach does not have a worldwide constituency of donors to call upon, but does testify to the fact that God has His hand on this little outreach and, though funds are most often scarce, He somehow brings us through.
- We crave earnest prayers of those who want to see Christ's kingdom extended to the unreached of this world.

Rev. and Mrs. Eben Yoon 2006 Ha-Eun, Ha-Jin
Bible College of East Africa P.O. Box 41140 Nairobi 00100, KENYA East Africa
Phone: 011-254-20-856-2606 Email: pcceben@gmail.com
In I Thessalonians 2:12, the Word of God says that His people are called “unto his kingdom and glory.” Some of His people are called to serve Him in their homelands, and some are in the foreign field. Mr. and Mrs. Eben Yoon are in the second group; God called them to serve in a foreign land, particularly Kenya, East Africa.
Eben was a young boy when he heard the message from an Ethiopian pastor. From his testimony Eben was impressed by his eagerness to spread the Gospel and thus challenged by his Christian life. When he heard that this pastor had been persecuted and imprisoned, God made Eben look at himself in the blessed country of Korea. And when he heard that there are a lot of people dying without knowing Jesus Christ, his heart was finally moved; God gave him a holy burden.
It was sometime in 1990 when Dr. Lynn Gray Gordon (former President of IBPFM) visited Eben’s church (Glory Bible Presbyterian Church in Seoul), and preached about missions and the call to service. On that Sunday, God spoke to Eben’s heart through His servant and he knew that God wanted him to serve Him as a missionary. On that day, Eben dedicated by life to God.
Through the testimony and ministry of Rev. Mark Kim (principal of BCEA) Eben was challenged for missions in Kenya and prayed for that work. After some period of prayers, the Holy Spirit convinced him that Kenya was the place God wanted him to serve in.
Eben and Mi Jung were married in 2002. Commissioned under the IBPFM to Kenya in May 2006, the Yoons have a vital part in BCEA. Eben lectures at the school while Mi Jung serves the Lord as the headmistress of kindergarten in BCEA. She has seven years of experience as a kindergarten teacher in Korea and in Singapore. Even though there are some linguistic difficulties and cultural differences, she enjoys her part in this mission field. God has blessed them with a daughter (Ha Eun), whose friendliness is her ministry at a very young age. It is the Yoon’s prayer that she may join us as a second generation missionary when she becomes a qualified age.
PRAYER REQUESTS/GOALS FOR THE FUTURE
- Pray for the School.
For wisdom; as it is mentioned earlier, pray for wisdom so I may teach the true Word of God. For all missionaries and faculty at BCEA. For all students that they may be faithful students and diligent servants.
- Pray for the Kindergarten
For wisdom in administration. For all teachers. For kindergarteners that they may grow in faith.
- Pray for Safety
For safety on the road. For security in the school.
